One example is Caladesi Island State Park, a secluded treasure located on the Gulf Coast. It’s situated about 13 miles north of Honeymoon Island State Park and just 8 miles northwest of Dunedin.

A Natural Escape

Caladesi Island State Park is an undeveloped barrier island known for its lush mangrove forests, towering olive oaks, clear waters, and soft white sand beaches. These features make it ideal for unwinding and reconnecting with nature. The island was once part of Honeymoon Island but separated after a hurricane in 1921. More recently, Hurricane Helene struck in September 2024, leading to temporary closures. However, the park reopened on July 3, 2025, though accommodations are still limited.

Despite the challenges, Caladesi Island has earned recognition as one of the best beaches in the country. In 2022, it was named the second-best beach in the U.S. by Dr. Beach.

Activities and Attractions

The main attraction at Caladesi Island State Park is its stunning beach, which stretches about four miles. The soft, white sand and calm, shallow waters make it perfect for walking, swimming, or simply relaxing with a book. Birdwatchers will also enjoy spotting various species as they hunt for seafood along the shoreline.

Fishing enthusiasts can cast a line from the shore or a boat, with opportunities to catch fish like trout, redfish, snook, Spanish mackerel, and flounder. Don’t forget to bring your fishing gear and a valid Florida fishing license. Along the beach, you’ll find an array of seashells, including tulips, jewel boxes, and whelks.

For those who love hiking, the island offers a 2.5-mile trail that winds through dunes, oak hammocks, and pine forests. Some trees in these forests are over 100 years old. Wildlife lovers can spot gopher tortoises, osprey, turtles, snakes, and raccoons while exploring the trails.

The park is also home to a bird sanctuary and part of the Great Florida Birding Trail. Visitors can spot black skimmers, American oystercatchers, Piping Plovers, Red Knots, and Brown Pelicans. Kayakers can enjoy a paddling trail through mangrove forests, with options for one-mile and three-mile loops. Kayaks are available for rent at the park for around $25 per person.

Nearby Destinations and Getting There

Caladesi Island State Park is not only secluded but also conveniently close to other attractions. Nature lovers can visit the Rotary Centennial Nature Center in Honeymoon Island State Park to explore local plants and marine life. The nearby state park also features pavilions, a playground, and nature trails.

Another popular spot is Dunedin Causeway, a short drive from Honeymoon Island State Park via Causeway Boulevard. It’s a great place for sunbathing, kayaking, and fishing. Skaters, joggers, and cyclists also enjoy the area.

For adventure seekers, the Fred Pinellas Trail offers a unique experience. This 39-mile trail, originally a railroad, runs from Tarpon Springs to St. Petersburg. It’s ideal for skating, cycling, jogging, and strolling while enjoying views of downtown Dunedin, which includes parks, restaurants, and shops.

Bike rentals are available at Kafe Racer along the trail. When hunger strikes, visitors can enjoy meals at Casa Tina for Mexican cuisine, The Black Pearl for fine dining, or 7venth Sun Brewery for a refreshing beer.

To reach Caladesi Island, visitors can take a personal boat or a ferry from Honeymoon Island State Park. Ferries depart every 30 minutes, with free round-trip tickets for children under 5, $10 for kids aged 6 to 12, and $20 for adults.
