A Hidden Gem in Antwerp

Antwerp is a city that often goes unnoticed by travelers who prefer the more famous destinations of Brussels and Bruges. However, this historic port town has its own unique charm, with a rich design heritage and a vibrant cultural scene. Strolling through the old town, discovering the art and architecture that inspired the Antwerp Six group of designers, can be just as rewarding as exploring other cities, but without the crowds and selfie sticks.

The Botanic Sanctuary Antwerp aims to change that perception. This stunning hotel is located in the heart of the city, built within the walls of a monastery and adjacent to the Botanic Gardens. It offers a strong focus on wellness and rejuvenation, making it an ideal destination for those seeking a peaceful retreat. But there's much more to explore beyond the hotel’s serene environment.

Why Stay at Botanic Sanctuary Antwerp?

One of the main reasons to stay here is that it's a destination in itself. You could use it as a base to explore the city and surrounding areas, with the hotel offering day trips to Dutch oyster suppliers. Alternatively, you could simply relax on-site and enjoy the tranquil surroundings. The hotel’s location makes it easily accessible from major European cities—just one hour from Amsterdam, two from Paris, or three from London via Eurostar. Local trains from Brussels take about 40 minutes, making it a convenient choice for travelers.

The hotel’s traditional brick exterior gives way to contemporary design inside, with smooth, cool surfaces that create a sense of calm. Rooms are spacious and comfortable, featuring warm wood that balances the sleek stone. The owners have curated their own art collection throughout the building and grounds, and the central courtyard feels like a private garden square. A street used by locals runs between the main reception and spa, providing a direct connection to the city whenever desired. A network of tunnels allows guests to move around the complex without being seen by the outside world.

Dining Experience

Gastronomy is a key part of the Botanic Sanctuary Antwerp experience. The hotel features five restaurants, with breakfast served in a dedicated space called Catalpa. Each restaurant offers a small à la carte menu, complemented by a buffet. The emphasis is on conscious eating and indulgence, with plenty of options for lunch and dinner. The first meal of the day might not be a priority for many, but the variety available is impressive.

The former kitchen of the nuns who once lived here now hosts an experimental High Tea by acclaimed pâtissier Roger van Damme. The selection includes savory items that go beyond the usual afternoon tea fare, along with delicate sweets paired with champagne and fine teas. Brightly colored tiles are illuminated by sunlight streaming through tall windows, creating a meadow-like atmosphere perfect for enjoying the vibrant flavors of the menu.

During my visit, I had the opportunity to attend the inaugural Gourmet Festival held at the hotel. This event showcased the diverse culinary options available, and it was a highlight of my stay. My final evening was spent in the courtyard, where I enjoyed a tasting menu created by Alberto Landgraf of Brazil's Oteque, paired with Sicilian wines presented by their maker. The collaboration between Brazilian ingredients and local chefs made for a memorable dining experience.

The hotel boasts several Michelin-starred restaurants, including Hertog Jan, a "Flemish omakase" concept, and Fine Fleur. However, Hertog Jan is only open for two weeks each month. No matter which restaurant you choose, you can expect high standards and a delightful digestif under the trees in the gardens.

Things to Do

The hotel’s central location makes exploring on foot easy. Antwerp is a beautiful city with plenty to discover, especially in the old town. Belgium is known for its spectacular carved wood pulpits in churches, and the Antwerp Cathedral houses four of the best examples.

If you prefer to stay within the sanctuary, there are plenty of options for relaxation. The hotel features an enormous spa facility and its own apothecary. The gym is one of the most substantial I've seen in a city hotel, and the pool offers views of the garden and courtyard.

Final Thoughts

The Botanic Sanctuary Antwerp successfully combines the luxury of a retreat with the convenience of a city location. While I enjoy relaxing breaks, I also find it hard to stay in one place for too long. This hotel seems to offer the perfect solution for those seeking both peace and exploration in the heart of Flanders.
