Is a Week in Paris, Hawaii, or the Shore More Affordable? We Found Out

Comparing the Cost of a Beach Vacation to a European Getaway
For many, the Jersey Shore has long been a go-to destination for summer vacations. However, with rising rental prices and increasing travel costs, some are questioning whether it’s more affordable to head overseas instead. The debate is especially relevant for those who have faced soaring Shore rental costs in recent years.
Lisa Guercio of Philadelphia, who first raised this point in 2023, still stands by her original claim that destinations like Paris, Rome, or London can be cheaper than a week at the Shore. However, she notes that prices in Europe have also risen over the past few years. This makes the question even more pressing: Can you really save money by booking a last-minute trip to Europe instead of driving down the A.C. Expressway?
To find out, we reached out to local travel agents in Philadelphia to compare the cost of trips to various destinations, including Honolulu, Paris, Puerto Rico, Ireland, and Tuscany, against typical Shore rentals.
Honolulu: A High-End Alternative
One of the most expensive destinations compared was Honolulu. A family of four could expect to spend around $4,670 for a week, including airfare and a hotel stay. Airfare alone was about $660 per person, with a three-star hotel offering an ocean view for $2,030.
While the price is high, it's comparable to some of the more expensive Shore rentals. The food options in Honolulu are also unique, with dishes like kalua pig and pipikaula short ribs priced around $30. Beaches are free, and drinks like coconut water and local beer are reasonably priced.
Shore Rentals: A Range of Options
On the other hand, Shore rentals offer a wide range of prices. For example, a two-bedroom condo in Stone Harbor can start as low as $3,200 for a week, plus gas, tolls, and beach tags. Some properties, like a “barefoot bungalow” on 87th, are available for $995 a night, totaling $6,965 for seven nights.
In Wildwood, a motel room can be found for as little as $1,386 for the week. Food options include smoked half chicken at Wildwood BBQ for $18, and drinks like a six-pack of unfiltered Baker’s Double from Mudhen for $14.99.
San Juan, Puerto Rico: A More Affordable Option
San Juan offers a more budget-friendly alternative. A studio unit for four for a week costs around $2,875, including airfare from Wilmington, N.C. The rates are significantly lower than many weekly Shore rentals, and the beaches are free. Food options like duck ropa viejo tacos and a Bloody Mary linguine pasta are reasonably priced, while local beers like Medalla Light cost just $5.
Paris: A Cultural Experience
A trip to Paris for two people comes in at $3,012, including airfare, hotel, and city tax. The 9Hotel République offers contemporary rooms near popular areas like Place de la République and the Marais district. Food in Paris includes dishes like tagliatelle with mushrooms and truffle cream for €15, and a glass of French beer for €6.80.
Ireland and Tuscany: Luxury Options
Ireland offers a more luxurious option, with a week-long trip for a couple costing around $6,800. A private villa in Tuscany, which sleeps up to 13 people, is available for $10,808 for a week in August. These options provide a family-friendly experience, though they are more expensive than some Shore rentals.
Long Beach Island and Ocean City: Wide Price Ranges
Prices on Long Beach Island vary widely, ranging from $2,500 to $45,000 for a week. In Ocean City, a house that sleeps 14 is available for $7,500, though it’s not ideal for smaller groups.
Margate: A Private Pool Option
Margate offers a four-bedroom home with a private pool, located just 200 yards from the beach. At $1,741 a night, the total for the week is $12,185. Food options include fried oysters for $19 and a splurge-worthy pork chop for $44.
Conclusion: The Choice Is Yours
Whether it’s cheaper to visit Europe or the Jersey Shore depends on several factors, including the size of your group, the type of accommodation you want, and how far in advance you book. While some European destinations can be more affordable, the Shore still offers unique experiences and value for families. Ultimately, the decision comes down to personal preferences and budget considerations.
