The business has its own parking lot, which is a big plus for visitors who want to avoid the hassle of finding street parking.

To reach Adventure Mystic, take I-95 and exit onto Route 27 at Exit 90. While this road may not be completely free of traffic, it’s much less congested than crossing the Mystic River through the downtown area. If the parking lot is full, there are usually options for nearby street parking.

My Kayaking Experience on the Mystic River

During my visit, I rented a kayak and spent an hour exploring the Mystic River. Adventure Mystic provided me with a wet bag and a waterproof phone pouch, which was incredibly useful for keeping my belongings safe. I was also given a life vest, ensuring my safety while on the water.

The direction of the trip depends on the tides, and the staff plans the route so that you’re going against the tide when you head out, allowing you to return with the tide. This makes the return journey easier, especially after a long session on the water.

As we began our journey, we headed toward the historic swing bridge, which offered great views of the drawbridge. We were lucky enough to witness the drawbridge opening while we were on the river, which was a memorable moment.

We paddled under the drawbridge and past Mystic River Park, where we saw numerous boats on both sides of the river due to the nearby marinas. Continuing further, we passed the Mystic River Railroad Bridge, where we watched the swing bridge open again—an exciting sight.

After passing the train bridge, we made our way to the Mystic Seaport Museum. I loved seeing the lighthouse from the water and even got to cruise by the Sabino, a historic wooden steamboat that serves as a working exhibit. The Sabino offers daily trips during the warmer months, providing visitors with both entertainment and educational experiences.

Is Adventure Mystic Worth It?

Absolutely! Kayaking or paddleboarding on the Mystic River is a fantastic way to explore the area at your own pace. There’s a lot of flexibility, as you can choose a half-day (four hours) or a full-day (eight hours) rental. If I had the chance to do it again, I would definitely go for a half-day to explore more of the river and see places like Noank or Enders Island from the water.
