A New Partnership Ensures the Continuation of a Downtown Modesto Art Gallery

A downtown Modesto art gallery is set to remain open thanks to a new partnership between the Stanislaus Arts Council and Visit Modesto. This collaboration has allowed the gallery to continue hosting exhibits and serving as a cultural hub for the community.

Visit Modesto, which previously operated from a different location, has relocated to share space with the Stanislaus Arts Council Gallery at 1315 J St. The move was completed by July 1, marking a significant step in the partnership. According to Visit Modesto CEO Todd Aaronson, the decision to move was driven by the need to reduce their footprint for the upcoming fiscal year and an opportunity to support the arts council.

The partnership came about following a call for support in January, where both organizations shared a vision of creating a vibrant, community-centered cultural and visitor hub in downtown Modesto. Dominique Johnson, Executive Director of the Stanislaus Arts Council, emphasized that while the council itself was never in danger of dissolving, there had been concerns about declining community and artist interest in the gallery. This led to questions about its future, as reported in a March story in The Bee.

However, with Visit Modesto now operating in the same space, the gallery will continue to host exhibits. Although there are no current exhibits, the next one is expected to open in August. Johnson highlighted that the partnership allows both organizations to strengthen each other’s missions and better serve the public.

Benefits of the Collaboration

The collaboration provides the Stanislaus Arts Council with greater flexibility to continue offering exhibitions, provided they have the necessary funding, engagement from local artists, and staff resources. Johnson noted that public and artist engagement with the gallery has already seen an increase since earlier this year. Attendance at events like the Third Thursday Art Walk and exhibition receptions has grown, along with the number of artist submissions for exhibitions.

For Visit Modesto, the move to J Street offers increased visibility and a more strategic location. Previously located at 1008 12th St., the organization was looking to reduce its footprint and found the new space to be a strong fit. Aaronson mentioned that the existing relationship with the arts council played a key role in the decision. He praised Johnson for her professionalism and the synergy between their teams.

Visit Modesto serves as a resource for visitors, offering information on everything from wine tastings to Yosemite passes and scenic routes to San Francisco or Monterey. They also promote the annual Almond Blossom season tours and provide Modesto and California-themed swag such as magnets, postcards, and stickers.

Operational Details of the Shared Space

Visit Modesto is paying $1,320 per month for its portion of the rent, a reduction from the previous $3,275 monthly payment. The total monthly rent for the approximately 1,845-square-foot building is $2,399, with the shared cost structured based on square footage and operational use.

The front reception area, an adjacent front room, and a portion of the upstairs office suite are occupied by Visit Modesto. A reconfigured back room serves as an administrative workspace, while the Stanislaus Arts Council continues to use its upstairs executive office. The gallery's exhibit area remains intact, though the program structure is evolving to reflect current staffing capacity and a more sustainable model.

Artwork featured in exhibits will now be available for purchase online through the arts council's website. Visit Modesto staff are not involved in managing gallery sales or inquiries, ensuring a clear separation between the two organizations. Johnson explained that this shift allows for broader access and a more sustainable approach to exhibitions.

Future Plans and Community Impact

New signage is planned to reflect the dual occupancy of the space. Johnson described the partnership as a good match, rooted in mutual respect and aligned values. She believes the collaboration enhances public access to both culture and information, creating a more integrated experience for residents and visitors.

Aaronson echoed these sentiments, calling the partnership an incredible opportunity for visitors and teams alike. He noted that visitors benefit from the availability of gallery exhibits and art events, and he is optimistic about the future of the collaboration.

As the partnership progresses, the combined efforts of Visit Modesto and the Stanislaus Arts Council are expected to bring greater exposure to local artists and enrich the cultural landscape of downtown Modesto.
