RAGBRAI Day 2: Crossing the Line in Minnesota

RAGBRAI Day 2 Route: From Milford to Estherville
The second day of the RAGBRAI (Register's Annual Great Bicycle Ride Across Iowa) will see riders travel from Milford to Estherville, covering a total distance of 41.2 miles. This route is notable for its unique features and the introduction of new towns and experiences for participants.
Elevation Gain and Key Highlights
The day’s ride includes an elevation gain of 1,090 feet, adding a bit of challenge to the journey. As riders prepare for this segment, they can look forward to several highlights that make this day stand out.
One of the most significant aspects of this year’s route is the inclusion of Minnesota for the first time in RAGBRAI’s 52-year history. For 15 miles, the ride will cross into the Land of 10,000 Lakes, offering a fresh perspective for cyclists. The journey begins with a pass-through town of Wahpeton, which is known for its scenic beauty and proximity to West Lake Okoboji. This area, home to Gull Point State Park, is one of Iowa’s finest lakes and serves as a welcoming point for the event.
From there, the route heads north, crossing the Minnesota border and turning east toward Jackson County. Riders will arrive at Brown Park, a unique location situated between Pearl and Loon lakes. This spot will serve as a virtual meeting town, featuring vendors, including Minnesota eateries making their debut at RAGBRAI. Additionally, there will be entertainment options such as a tire dip site on Pearl Lake and a booth offering commemorative coins for registered riders.
The “Welcome to Minnesota” sign, typically located at the state line, has been moved to Brown Park for easier access and safer photo opportunities. This change adds a fun and interactive element to the experience.
A Brief Return to Iowa
After departing Brown Park, riders will head back into Iowa. This section of the route is the second shortest of the week, following Sunday’s longest day. There will be only one stop before reaching the overnight town of Estherville. This stop will be in Superior, a small community of just 130 residents. Despite its size, Superior is expected to offer a memorable experience for riders, showcasing the charm of small towns along the route.
Estherville: A Unique Overnight Town
Estherville, the overnight destination, is known for its diverse range of activities. The town will provide a variety of experiences, from a beer garden and agriculture show to IV therapy and walk-in flash tattoos. One of the town’s most intriguing claims to fame is its connection to a meteorite. On a May night in 1879, a nearly 750-pound meteorite struck the area, creating a dramatic explosion. A sculptural depiction of the meteorite and a piece of the actual space rock are on display at the Estherville Meteorite Center at 816 Central Ave.
Entertainment for the Evening
The evening in Estherville promises to be lively with performances by two beloved RAGBRAI acts. Des Moines’ Bad Friends will take the stage at 5:30 p.m., followed by the legendary Pork Tornadoes at 9 p.m. These groups are a staple of the event and ensure that the night ends on a high note.
Weather Forecast
The forecast for Monday indicates moderate temperatures in the low 80s with a chance of rain. Riders are advised to bring a raincoat to stay prepared for any weather changes.
Looking Ahead
On Tuesday, the longest ride of the week will take RAGBRAI participants to Forest City, the original home of Winnebago RVs. This day promises to be another exciting segment of the journey, offering new sights and experiences for all involved.
