The exhibition “The Art of Banksy: Without Limits” is set to open on January 30 at the Del Mar Fairgrounds, offering visitors a unique opportunity to explore the work of one of the most enigmatic and influential street artists of our time. This museum-style display features 200 pieces of Banksy artwork, including certified originals loaned by private collectors. The remaining pieces are replicas that have been carefully curated to provide an educational and artistic insight into the life and work of this mysterious figure.

Banksy, whose identity has remained hidden since his early graffiti days in the 1990s, has become a global icon for his provocative and thought-provoking art. His work often addresses social and political issues, using humor and satire to challenge viewers to think critically about the world around them. The exhibition not only showcases his artistic talent but also highlights his ability to provoke, shock, and unsettle society while promoting values such as sincerity, empathy, and compassion.

Tickets for the San Diego run of “The Art of Banksy: Without Limits” will go on sale at 9 a.m. on Thursday. The exhibition, which originally debuted in Istanbul in 2016, is not an official Banksy event but rather a tribute to his work. It includes a diverse range of items such as prints, photographs, lithographs, sculptures, murals, and video-mapping installations. Additionally, the Del Mar exhibition will feature an infinity room, a hologram installation, and a special room dedicated to Ukraine, showcasing Banksy’s interventions in areas affected by the ongoing conflict.

“The Art of Banksy: Without Limits” is more than just an exhibition; it is a philosophical showcase that reflects Banksy's mission to challenge societal norms and inspire change. As stated by Sorina Burlacu, the exhibition’s producer, “He achieves this with humor and poetry. Banksy possesses the unique ability to express truths that many hesitate to voice.”

Banksy’s creative journey began in the 1990s when he started creating graffiti on public buildings and structures in the UK. He worked overnight, using hand-cut cardboard stencils and spray paint to quickly complete his artworks and disappear without being seen. Over the years, his work has evolved to include sculpture, photography, film, multimedia art, and exhibitions. Many of his pieces are whimsical, but a significant portion is satirical protest art addressing issues such as war, violence, fascism, poverty, judicial overreach, corporate greed, and racism.

Some of Banksy’s most notable works include “Walled Off,” a now-shuttered hotel in Bethlehem, Israel, with windows overlooking the occupied territories, and “Dismaland,” a dystopian theme park in England. He also directed the Oscar-nominated documentary “Exit Through the Gift Shop.” Despite his fame, Banksy remains anonymous, and British journalists have spent decades trying to uncover his true identity. While some speculate that he may be Robin Gunningham, a native of Bristol, England, Gunningham has denied these claims. Others believe that Banksy could be a collective of artists working under a single name.

The “Art of Banksy: Without Limits” exhibition will run for an unspecified period at the Del Mar Fairgrounds Activity Center, located at 2260 Jimmy Durante Blvd. Exhibition hours will be from noon to 8 p.m. on Mondays through Thursdays, 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays, and 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Sundays.
