A Free DC Museum Loved By Many, Yet Criticized As One Of The Worst

The Controversial Ranking of the Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum
There’s something undeniably captivating about a museum that houses some of the most iconic artifacts in history. Think of a vast, high-ceilinged room filled with gleaming, antique aircraft suspended from the ceiling, the command module from the Apollo 11 mission, one of the Wright Brothers’ original biplanes from 1903, and even a model of the Starship Enterprise from the original Star Trek series. These are just a few of the treasures that can be found at Washington, D.C.’s Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum. However, despite its impressive collection, the museum recently made headlines for being ranked as the world's worst museum by a study conducted by Radical Storage.
The ranking was based on data collected from over 80,000 visitor reviews across the 100 most-visited museums globally. Using keywords and review scores, the company evaluated and ranked the top and bottom museums worldwide. The Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum came in last place with a score of 7.5 out of 100. The most frequently used negative word in reviews was “dull,” which appeared in 17.7% of all feedback. Only 35% of reviews were positive, while 15% were negative.
Despite this unflattering ranking, the museum remains a must-visit destination for those interested in aviation, space exploration, technology, and history. It’s also a great free attraction to include in a trip to Washington, D.C., especially when paired with other popular spots like the Lincoln Memorial or the city’s quirky pay phone, which has become a new favorite among tourists.
A Decline in Visitor Numbers
Before the pandemic, the Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum had seen a steady decline in visitor numbers since reaching an all-time high of 9.4 million in 2003. By 2024, the number had dropped to 1.9 million visitors. While this is far below the record set by the Louvre Museum in Paris, it still represents a significant number of people. So why does the museum continue to attract so many visitors if it’s receiving such poor ratings?
One possible explanation is that the museum has been undergoing extensive renovations since 2018. The project includes a major overhaul of the space, with 20 new galleries—eight of which opened in 2022—and the relocation of over 5,200 artifacts, along with the addition of 1,400 new items. This massive transformation is expected to be completed by 2026. However, during this time, certain areas of the museum remain closed to the public. Many negative reviews on platforms like TripAdvisor and Yelp mention disappointment due to the ongoing construction, which could have influenced the overall ratings.
What to Expect During Your Visit
Even with the renovations, the Smithsonian National Air and Space Museum continues to offer a wide range of experiences. Visitors can enjoy an IMAX theater, a planetarium, and the usual café and souvenir shops. As a free museum, it provides excellent value for those looking to explore the history of flight and space exploration.
For those interested in exploring more of the world’s less-than-stellar attractions, the Science Museum in London is often cited as one of the most disappointing museums in Europe.
