Biking across nearly 400 miles of New York State over the course of eight days is no small feat. This year, 600 cyclists embarked on an unforgettable adventure from Buffalo to Albany, marking the end of their journey on the final day. This event is not only a celebration of endurance but also a tribute to the history and beauty of upstate New York.

The 27th annual Erie Canal bike tour coincides with the 200th anniversary of the canal’s opening, making it a special occasion for participants and organizers alike. Supporting local organizations is a key aspect of the event. Dylan Carey, Director of Policy and Planning for Parks and Trails New York, emphasized the importance of the tour in supporting their mission. “It also goes to support Parks and Trails New York, a nonprofit organization based in Albany here and supporting our mission to make sure that our parks, our trails and all of our public lands have the resources they need to thrive and be able to welcome people both during our ride but all year round.”

Community Involvement and Challenges

The event has drawn participation from various organizations, including the Erie Canal Way National Heritage Corridor. Jean McKay, representing the corridor, shared her sentiments about the final day. “It’s a huge accomplishment for everybody and it’s really fun to be on that last day and a little bit bittersweet because you’re like, oh, you know, we’re almost done, but also really exciting.”

Participants faced numerous challenges throughout the trip, including long distances and unpredictable weather. Each day, riders covered between 40 to 60 miles, which can take a toll on both their bodies and their bikes. However, the support system in place ensured that they could continue their journey without major setbacks.

Support Along the Way

One of the most critical elements of the tour was the presence of a mobile bike mechanic. Jason Warren, the Erie Canal bike mechanic, shared his experiences. “We start as soon as they come off the bus and they’re looking wide eyed thinking what did they get themselves into all the way to the end when they’re all so proud of themselves. It’s wonderful.” Warren noted that he saw around 50 flat tires a day, highlighting the physical demands of the journey.

Rest and recovery were essential for the riders. Many stopped at Peebles Island State Park to grab water and snacks before heading back to Quackenbush Square in Albany. These moments of respite allowed them to recharge and prepare for the final stretch of their journey.

A Sense of Accomplishment

As the finish line approached, many riders felt a mix of emotions. Two local riders from Albany expressed their feelings upon reaching the end. “I feel stronger than we did at the beginning of the week and I guess proud and like lucky…thankful.” Their words reflected the sense of achievement that comes with completing such a demanding journey.

The event also attracted international participants, with a family from Italy joining the adventure. This global participation highlights the appeal of the Erie Canal bike tour and its ability to bring together people from different backgrounds.
