Need a reason for a trip to Maker's Mark? Chihuly's exhibit is back and bolder

A Unique Art Experience at Maker's Mark Distillery
Maker's Mark Distillery in Loretto, Kentucky, is once again offering a unique opportunity for visitors to experience the artistry of blown glass. This time, the distillery is showcasing an impressive collection of nine installations by renowned Seattle-based artist Dale Chihuly. The exhibition, titled "Chihuly x Maker's Mark at Star Hill Farm," runs from July 19 through December 7 and features both new-to-Kentucky works as well as pieces that have previously been displayed.
Rob Samuels, managing director of Maker's Mark, emphasized the distillery’s commitment to providing visitors with an exceptional artistic experience. He noted that as the first and largest craft distiller, the focus on art aligns with their dedication to craftsmanship and innovation. "It's just an honor to bring the Chihuly Studio back to Kentucky. This is a celebration of like-minded, pioneering creative leaders, and it's just exciting to share the work," Samuels said. He also expressed his surprise at how the exhibition has surpassed previous efforts, calling it a remarkable achievement.
Britt Cornett, director of exhibitions for Chihuly Studio, highlighted the special nature of the distillery space. "A little bit of an unconventional setting for contemporary art, but it's proved spectacular," she remarked. The collaboration between the distillery and Chihuly has created a one-of-a-kind experience that blends art, history, and craftsmanship.
What to Expect at the Exhibition
The exhibition includes several notable pieces, such as "Spirit of the Maker," which marks the distillery's first permanent piece. Visitors can explore the grounds and indoor spaces, each featuring different works that highlight Chihuly’s signature style. The exhibit begins with "Sapphire and Platinum Waterdrop Tower," a towering installation inspired by the distillery’s natural watershed. Inside the visitors center, "Amber and New Oak" serves as a welcoming chandelier that has become a permanent feature.
Other highlights include "Sol del Citron," a sun-themed piece located between the bourbon warehouse and the innovation lab, and "Venetians," a series of vases inspired by traditional Venetian glass-blowing techniques. Two new large-scale pieces, "Moonbow Fiori" and "Red Reeds on Logs," have been specifically created for this exhibition. In the aging warehouse, "End of the Day Persian Chandelier" adds a dramatic touch above barrels of private select bourbon.
Inside the tasting room, "The Spirit of the Maker" pays homage to the distillery itself, with hundreds of glass pieces arranged in the ceiling to filter colored light onto the walls below.
Special Experiences and Events
To enhance the visitor experience, Star Hill Farm has introduced an expanded dining and cocktail program. Tickets for the exhibition start at $26 and can be booked online. Admission includes a printed map for self-guided tours, allowing guests to explore at their own pace.
After-dark tours are available on Fridays and many Saturdays, requiring advance booking. These evening tours include a cocktail and a neat pour, while the restaurant remains open until 8 p.m. on Saturdays with limited seating. The outdoor patio offers additional space for guests to enjoy the ambiance.
For those looking for a refreshing treat, the Maker's Mark slushie made with Ale-8 One, a berry puree, and a pineapple wedge is a must-try. It provides a cooling effect that is nearly miraculous on a warm day.
