A Pilot's Quick Thinking Saves the Day

A pilot had to make a dramatic maneuver to avoid a potential disaster when a U.S. Air Force bomber came dangerously close to a commercial passenger plane. The incident occurred on a Delta Connection flight from Minneapolis-Saint Paul to Minot International Airport in North Dakota on Saturday night. The situation was tense, and the pilot had to act swiftly to prevent a mid-air collision with a B-52 Stratofortress from Minot Air Force Base.

The SkyWest Airlines flight, operating under the Delta Airlines connection service, was traveling for about 90 minutes when the unexpected encounter happened. The Embraer E175 aircraft found itself in a perilous position as it neared the B-52 bomber. According to reports, the pilot executed an "aggressive" evasive maneuver to avoid a collision, which passengers and crew members witnessed through the windows of the aircraft.

Despite the alarming nature of the event, the atmosphere on board was described as "weirdly calm." Passengers experienced a series of sudden, sharp turns, which left many confused. One passenger, Monica Green, shared her experience with KFYR TV, explaining that she initially thought she might be imagining things because no one else seemed to react.

"I felt like I was gaslighting myself, like maybe I was being crazy, because no one else was reacting," Green said. She added that the plane made a very hard turn, and that’s when the pilot came over the intercom to apologize and explain the situation.

The pilot’s tone suggested that there was a moment of uncertainty about whether the plane would land safely. "The way he said it, it almost sounded like he was insinuating that landing safely might not be an option for a moment," Green reported. She noted that the passengers simply looked at each other and remained quiet during the incident.

Green praised the pilot for his quick response and for providing a detailed explanation after the event. She could sense that the pilot was stressed, even though he tried to remain calm. "He was very casual, if you can be casual about something like that, but you could tell he was stressed. He was almost shaking, trying to find the right words, but he was nice and detailed," she said.

According to Aviation A2Z, the pilot explained that Air Traffic Control had instructed him to change course due to the proximity of another plane ahead on the landing approach. He also mentioned that there had been no prior notice of military aircraft activity in the area, which is unusual given the radar systems at Minot Air Force Base. The pilot decided the safest course of action was to position the aircraft behind the bomber.

After the plane landed without any issues, passengers expressed their gratitude to the pilot for his transparency throughout the journey. SkyWest issued a statement confirming the incident: "SkyWest flight 3788, operating as Delta Connection from Minneapolis, Minnesota to Minot, North Dakota on July 18, landed safely in Minot after being cleared for approach by the tower but performed a go-around when another aircraft became visible in their flight path. We are investigating the incident."

This incident highlights the critical role pilots play in ensuring the safety of passengers and crew, especially in unexpected and high-stress situations. The quick thinking and composure of the pilot were essential in avoiding a potentially catastrophic outcome.
