Southwest expands with new California route in 4-city push

Southwest Airlines Expands Its Presence in California with New Destination
Southwest Airlines has made a significant move in the competitive California aviation market by adding a new destination to its route map. The airline will begin flights to Santa Rosa's Charles M. Schulz — Sonoma County Airport (STS) on April 7, marking a strategic expansion into one of the state’s most renowned wine regions. This development comes as the airline continues to strengthen its foothold in California, where it has long maintained a strong presence.
The new service from STS will include four routes operated by Southwest. Daily flights will connect Santa Rosa to both San Diego and Las Vegas, while Burbank will see five weekly departures. A Saturday-only service will also be available to Denver. These routes are expected to provide travelers with greater connectivity and convenience, especially for those looking to explore Northern California’s famous wine country.
STS is located approximately 60 miles north of San Francisco, nestled between two of California’s most iconic wine regions—Sonoma and Napa Counties. The airport serves as a gateway to these areas, offering visitors easy access to vineyards, wineries, and other attractions. With the addition of Southwest, Santa Rosa now has three airlines operating out of STS: Alaska Airlines, which is the busiest carrier at the airport, and American Airlines, which offers two routes.
This expansion marks Southwest’s 14th destination in California, a state where the airline has consistently been a major player. However, the competitive landscape is becoming increasingly challenging, particularly with the rapid growth of Alaska Airlines in San Diego and the recent changes in the Burbank market.
Intensifying Competition in the Golden State
The competition at STS has been heating up since April 2021, when startup airline Avelo entered the market. Avelo initially offered eight routes from STS, prompting a response from several carriers, including Alaska Airlines. However, Avelo announced in July that it would exit its entire West Coast operation, creating a void in service that several airlines have since sought to fill.
Southwest is now stepping in to take over two of the routes previously operated by Avelo: Las Vegas and Burbank. This move places the airline in direct competition with Alaska Airlines on both routes, as well as with its growing operations in San Diego. The decision reflects Southwest’s strategy to maintain its dominance in the California market and expand its reach into new regions.
In a statement, Andrew Watterson, Southwest’s chief operating officer, highlighted the significance of the new destination. “Adding Charles M. Schulz Sonoma County Airport to our route map provides more access to California’s famed Wine Country for our Customers and further solidifies our yearslong commitment to California,” he said. The airline also emphasized its leadership in intra-California service, noting that it offers more available seats and daily departures than any other carrier without regional affiliates.
Expansion and Future Plans
The addition of STS is part of a broader trend of expansion for Southwest Airlines. In 2025, the airline has announced four new destinations, following a period of no new additions over the previous four years. The other new locations include Knoxville, Tennessee; St. Thomas in the U.S. Virgin Islands; and St. Maarten in the Caribbean. Southwest has also indicated that it plans to add at least one more destination soon.
As the airline continues to grow, the impact of its new service at STS remains to be seen. While the move strengthens Southwest’s position in California, it also raises questions about how competitors will respond. With increased competition, the aviation market in the Golden State is set for an exciting and dynamic future.
