Passengers on UK's Most Unreliable Train Operator Face 11-Minute Delays

Understanding the Performance of UK Train Operators
A recent analysis of train performance in the UK has revealed significant disparities among rail operators, with some services experiencing much higher levels of delays and cancellations than others. The study, which evaluated data from the Office of Rail and Road between August 2024 and August 2025, looked at various factors including punctuality, cancellation rates, and average passenger delays to determine a performance score for each operator.
Avanti West Coast emerged as the least reliable train operator, ranking last in the assessment. Passengers on Avanti West Coast trains face an average delay of 10.61 minutes, with only 38.90% of trains arriving on time. Additionally, the cancellation rate for this operator stands at 3.98%, further contributing to its poor performance.
Other train lines that performed poorly include CrossCountry, which came in second with an average delay of 6.10 minutes, and Great Western Railway, which ranked third with an average delay of 6.57 minutes and a cancellation rate of 3.75%.
In contrast, several train operators were recognized for their reliability. Greater Anglia topped the list with a performance score of 97.16 out of 100. This operator excelled in punctuality, with 83.81% of trains arriving within 59 seconds of their scheduled time, and passengers experienced average delays of just 1.37 minutes.
Chiltern Railways and c2c also made it into the top three most reliable operators. Chiltern Railways achieved a score of 86.39, with an average delay of 2.35 minutes, while c2c scored 95.84, with an average delay of 1.12 minutes. These operators demonstrated strong performance, with minimal delays and low cancellation rates.
The study was conducted by Roberto Romanello from Bet Clever, who highlighted the stark differences in reliability across the UK's rail network. He noted that passengers on the worst-performing routes face more than five times the delays compared to those on the best services. With rising train fares, he emphasized that passengers have every right to expect punctual and reliable services.
Romanello also pointed out that the performance gap between operators suggests that reliability issues cannot be solely attributed to infrastructure. Some operators manage to maintain better performance on the same rail network, indicating that operational efficiency plays a crucial role.
Top Performing Train Operators
Here are the top performers based on the rankings:
- Greater Anglia: 1.37 minutes average delay
- c2c: 1.12 minutes average delay
- Chiltern Railways: 2.35 minutes average delay
- ScotRail: 2.16 minutes average delay
- Merseyrail: 1.54 minutes average delay
These operators all had average passenger delays under 2.5 minutes and cancellation rates below 2.1 per cent, showcasing their commitment to reliable service.
