America's Snowiest City May Surprise You

If you're someone who shivers at the thought of cold weather, visiting the snowiest city in America might not be on your list of dream destinations. However, for those who find joy in the sight, feel, and ambiance of fresh, powdery snow blanketing everything like a snow globe that never stops, discovering the country's snowiest city could lead to a new favorite winter getaway. While you might guess that this title belongs to South Bend, Indiana, or perhaps Anchorage, Alaska, you would be slightly off the mark. The honor actually goes to Syracuse, New York.

According to the Golden Snow Globe National Show Contest, which ranks the snowiest U.S. cities with populations over 100,000, Syracuse was recognized as the snowiest city during the 2024–2025 season. It consistently appears on various snowiest lists, averaging over 110 inches of snow annually. The National Weather Service recorded a total snowfall of 110.5 inches at Syracuse Airport after the last winter season.

Syracuse’s heavy snowfall is due to a natural phenomenon called lake effect snow. This occurs when warm lake water interacts with cold, dry air, creating snowflakes. Syracuse’s location near Lake Ontario means it frequently experiences lake effect snow. A recent study even found that Lake Ontario contributes up to 116 inches of snow to the area each year. While this creates a picturesque winter landscape, it can also bring intense snowstorms and harsh winter conditions.

How to embrace the snow in Syracuse, New York

Winter in Syracuse doesn’t mean staying indoors all season—far from it. There are plenty of ways to enjoy the unique weather. Highland County Forest Park, just a 30-minute drive from the city, offers trails perfect for snowshoeing through a pristine winter environment. If walking through snow isn't your thing, you can take a horse-drawn sleigh ride and feel like you're in a Hallmark Christmas movie.

For an affordable yet stunning ski resort experience, head to Gore Mountain, about a 2.5-hour drive from Syracuse.
