King County Crew Saves Driver Trapped in Floodwaters
A Life-Saving Rescue in the Midst of Flooding
In a dramatic turn of events, a King County road crew successfully rescued a driver who became trapped in floodwaters near Auburn, Washington. The incident occurred on Tuesday night when the Green River's rising waters submerged a vehicle, leaving the driver in a dangerous situation.
The Green River, known for its unpredictable nature, saw its levels soar to alarming heights, submerging parts of the road and creating hazardous conditions. The driver had attempted to navigate a closed stretch of road near Black Diamond Road, only to find himself stuck with no escape. As the sun set, the area turned treacherous, and the driver's car was eventually engulfed by the cold waters of the Green River.
Witnesses reported that at one point, the car went underwater up to the mid-windshield before popping back up and stalling. It was nearly impossible to see the driver in the dark, waving for help without the aid of high-power camera lenses. Fortunately, FOX 13 crews were able to capture the scene and relay the information to the King County Roads Division.
Quick Action Saves a Life
Upon receiving the report, the King County Roads Division 4 Crew Chief Brady Shannon and equipment operator Ian Jameyson sprang into action. They quickly assessed the situation and backed their truck up to the stranded vehicle. A helicopter circled overhead, providing additional support as the team worked to rescue the driver.
The two crew members reached the driver, pulling him to safety and then powering out with the truck. Despite being cold and wet, the driver expressed his gratitude for the timely assistance. His story serves as a reminder of the dangers posed by flooding and the importance of heeding road closures during severe weather.
Impact on the Community
In nearby Sumner, the Stewart Street Bridge was also closed due to the rising river levels. City officials are working to assemble a wall around the regional treatment facility, which is located near the confluence of the Puyallup and White Rivers. The city notes that the two rivers have flowed together earlier than usual, highlighting the unusual nature of the current weather patterns.
Residents in the area have been urged to remain cautious and check the weather before venturing out. Jayden Petrson, an Auburn resident, emphasized the need for safe driving practices during such conditions. "I know we are supposed to have a storm here. Make sure you guys drive safe and make sure you check the weather before going out," he said.
