A New Era in Family Cruising

The future of family cruising is making waves with the launch of a groundbreaking cruise ship. Royal Caribbean recently unveiled the Legend of the Seas, which was floated out from its dry dock at the Meyer Turku shipyard in Finland in September 2025. This massive vessel, with a gross tonnage of 250,800, can accommodate up to 7,000 passengers and stretches 1,198 feet in length. It joins the ranks of the world’s largest cruise ships, marking a significant milestone in maritime innovation.

Once the hull was afloat, the real excitement began: the installation of eight unique neighborhoods, dining and bar venues, endless attractions, and thousands of staterooms. The sight of this colossal ship is not only impressive but also signals a new era of family-friendly fun, made possible by the cutting-edge engineering and design expertise of the Finnish shipyard and the Royal Caribbean team.

A Floating City for All Ages

At the heart of Legend of the Seas’ appeal is its vast array of activities, following in the footsteps of sister ships like the Icon of the Seas and Star of the Seas, both part of the record-breaking Icon Class. Designed from the keel up for family fun, the ship offers something for every generation, from toddlers to grandparents.

One of the most popular areas is the Surfside neighborhood, where families can spend the day splashing around, refueling at Surfside Bites, and playing in the arcades. For thrill-seekers, the Category 6 waterpark is the largest at sea, featuring massive slides such as the "Frightening Bolt," the tallest slide at sea, the open freefall "Pressure Drop," and mat and raft rides. For an extra adrenaline rush, guests can dangle high above the water on the "Crown's Edge" skywalk or test their surfing skills on the 40-foot-long "FlowRider" simulator.

Keeping Kids Entertained Onboard

A key challenge when traveling with children is keeping them entertained across different age groups. The cruise line’s signature Adventure Ocean program offers a unique experience tailored for young mariners, with activities designed for Aquanauts (ages 3-5), TRIP MASTERYrs (6-8), and Voyagers (9-12). From theater and art to science and games, there’s something for everyone. Families can even become the stars of the show in escape rooms, dance contests, and virtual concerts.

When it comes to dining, the choices are just as diverse. Guests can enjoy sophisticated world cuisine at Izumi Hibachi & Sushi, savor Italian delights at Giovanni's Italian Kitchen & Wine Bar, or grab a juicy burger at the casual Basecamp.

Luxury Meets Family Fun

For those seeking an over-the-top experience, the Ultimate Family Townhouse offers a three-level suite that sleeps up to eight guests. Complete with an inside chute slide, a private dining room and kitchenette, a hot tub, direct access to the Surfside neighborhood, and a private movie setup with a popcorn machine, this suite ensures that family fun never ends.

Launching in Europe and Beyond

Legend of the Seas is set to begin its career in Europe during the summer of 2026. The ship will first embark on seven-night Western Mediterranean itineraries before repositioning across the Atlantic in November to offer six-night Western Caribbean and eight-night Southern Caribbean cruises.

Expanding the Family Fleet

Royal Caribbean has already ordered a fourth Icon Class ship, scheduled for delivery in 2027, with options for two additional vessels. This would bring the total number of ships built for the cruise line by Meyer Turku to 21 over 28 years. Additionally, Legend of the Seas is part of the company’s commitment to sustainability, as it is the fourth cruise ship in the fleet to run on liquefied natural gas (LNG) and incorporates energy-conserving systems. These efforts align with the cruise line’s goal of developing a net-zero cruise ship by 2035.
