Sabrina Ionescu's Generosity and Partnership with Away

Sabrina Ionescu has always been known for her generosity, especially when it comes to supporting her teammates and the New York Liberty’s support staff. This season, she took it a step further by gifting the team with something both practical and thoughtful. During a practice session in June, the players returned to their locker room to find seafoam-colored Away crossbodies and custom-branded suitcases with their jersey numbers. The surprise was met with excitement and appreciation.

Natasha Cloud was among the first to express her gratitude, saying, “Thank you, Sab.” Meanwhile, Nyara Sabally admired the smaller bag, commenting, “These are cute.”

The gesture was not just a one-time gift. It marked the beginning of a significant partnership between Ionescu and the travel brand Away. On Monday, the company officially announced a multiyear deal with the WNBA star, making her the first-ever player from the league to sign with the brand.

This partnership makes sense given Ionescu’s frequent travels. She often finds herself on the road, whether it’s during the offseason or while participating in global events. Last year, she spent time in Miami for Unrivaled and also traveled internationally as a Nike signature athlete. Her constant movement made her an ideal partner for a brand like Away, which understands the needs of athletes who are always on the move.

Ionescu expressed her excitement about the collaboration in an interview with The Post. “It’s exciting,” she said. “Obviously, it’s a great brand to be partnered with and they understand how I use it in my daily life. I’m traveling a lot, going from place to place.”

Beyond the professional aspect, the partnership also aligns with Away’s commitment to supporting women’s athletes. Ionescu praised the brand for its dedication to advancing the game. “To know I can have great partners that continue to push the game forward… is something I’m super excited about,” she said.

Away CEO Jessica Schinazi echoed those sentiments, highlighting Ionescu’s impact both on and off the court. “At Away, we’re inspired by those who push boundaries and redefine expectations in their fields,” she said in a statement. “Sabrina is not only a generational talent but embodies the bold spirit, leadership and forward momentum that Away champions. Travel and sport are deeply connected, and partnering with Sabrina is a natural continuation of our commitment to empowering athletes and the journey they take both on and off the court.”

As part of the partnership, Ionescu and Away will unveil a limited edition collection next year. They will also collaborate on community initiatives through the SI20 Foundation, which Ionescu founded. Additionally, the brand will continue to provide travel gear for her teammates throughout the season.

While much of Ionescu’s time is dedicated to her career, she also enjoys taking breaks during the WNBA offseason. She and her husband, Hroniss Grasu, love vacationing in Hawaii, where they also celebrated their honeymoon. “We’re big Hawaii fans,” she said. “But being able to just kind of—no pun intended—get away and relax, like good weather, good food, the water. The time change actually is really nice because you can kind of like disconnect, get up early, workout. But I would say Hawaii for sure is kind of a destination we got to every offseason and one we enjoy.”

Through her generosity, partnerships, and love for travel, Ionescu continues to make a lasting impact both on and off the court.
