South Shore Beaches Welcome Dogs Again in September

As the month of September arrives, it brings with it a sense of transition. With the arrival of autumn, back-to-school routines, and the cooling weather, many South Shore beaches are also welcoming a familiar companion—your furry four-legged friend. After a busy summer season, several beaches are relaxing their restrictions, allowing dogs to enjoy the sand once more.

This change comes as part of the off-season, which typically begins after Labor Day. While some beaches ban dogs during peak times, many allow them to return in mid-September, offering a chance for pets and their owners to enjoy the beach together.

Wollaston Beach, Quincy

Wollaston Beach, part of Quincy Shores Reservation, is one of the first to welcome dogs back. Starting on September 16, dogs are allowed on the beach until March 31. The beach is maintained by the state’s Department of Conservation and Recreation (DCR). All dogs must be on leashes at all times.

Nantasket Beach, Hull

Nantasket Beach will also open its doors to dogs starting September 16. Like Wollaston Beach, it is managed by the DCR, and dogs must remain on leashes while on the beach.

Scituate Beaches

Scituate beaches will allow dogs from September 16 through June 14, between 10 a.m. and 6 p.m. Leashed dogs are permitted throughout this time. Additionally, the town offers free parking at several beaches, including Minot, North Scituate, Sand Hills, Egypt, Pegotty, and Humarock, after Labor Day.

Duxbury Beach

Duxbury Beach has specific rules for dogs. A permit is required for all dogs, regardless of residency, from April 1 to September 15. During this period, dogs are banned from Resident Beach and the bayside beach north of the Powder Point Bridge. The cost for a permit is $10 for residents and $25 for non-residents.

Cape Cod National Seashore

Although not part of the South Shore, the Cape Cod National Seashore allows dogs on certain beaches starting in mid-October. From October 16 through March 31, dogs are permitted at Coast Guard Beach in Eastham, Nauset Marsh in Eastham, Jeremy Point (Great Island) in Wellfleet, Hatches Harbor in Provincetown, and Herring Cove in Provincetown. Dogs must be on six-foot leashes, and restrictions may apply depending on bird nesting seasons.

Stodder’s Neck, Hingham

Some locations allow dogs year-round. One such place is Stodder’s Neck, where dogs can be off-leash in certain areas. This park is managed by the DCR and is surrounded by the Weymouth Back River.

Marshfield Beaches

Marshfield beaches are another great option for dog owners. Rexhame and Green Harbor beaches allow leashed dogs year-round. After Labor Day, beach parking restrictions are lifted, making it easier for visitors to access these spots.

Long Beach, Plymouth

Long Beach has varying rules for dogs across different zones. In "Zone 1 South," which covers the main parking area to the halfway point of the peninsula, leashed dogs are allowed year-round. However, from "Zone 1 North" to "Zone 4," only leashed dogs are permitted from October 1 to March 31. During other times, this area is off-limits to dogs.

These changes make the South Shore an ideal destination for pet owners looking to enjoy the beach with their companions. Whether you're looking for a year-round spot or a seasonal getaway, there are plenty of options available. Always check local guidelines and ensure your dog is on a leash when required.
