This Week: United Unveils Historic Down Under Route

New Non-Stop Route Connects San Francisco to Adelaide
United Airlines is launching a new non-stop flight service connecting San Francisco to Adelaide, South Australia. The inaugural flight will take off from San Francisco International Airport (SFO) on Thursday, December 11, and the route will operate seasonally three times a week. This marks a significant development in air travel between the United States and Australia.
Four Australian Gateways from SFO
The service to Adelaide will be United's fourth Australian gateway from SFO, following existing non-stop flights to Brisbane, Sydney, and Melbourne. This will be the first time a direct non-stop service has connected Adelaide to the United States, making United the only airline offering non-stop services to four different ports in Australia.
Three Flights Per Week
The seasonal service will be operated using United’s Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner, which will provide non-stop flights from SFO to Adelaide Airport (ADL). The nearly 15-hour journey will offer travelers a quick way to reach popular tourist destinations such as Kangaroo Island, the Eyre Peninsula, and the Barossa Valley.
Flights will depart from SFO on Mondays, Thursdays, and Saturdays at 11:05 pm, arriving in Adelaide at 9:30 am two days later after crossing the international date line. Return flights will leave Adelaide on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Saturdays at 2:55 pm local time, arriving back in San Francisco the same day at 11:15 am.
The 787-9 aircraft will have a total of 257 seats, including United Polaris business class and Premium Plus premium economy cabins, alongside economy class.
A Major Step for Adelaide Airport
Adelaide Airport celebrated the news when it was first announced in April. The airport's Managing Director, Brenton Cox, emphasized the importance of this new route:
"Adelaide will now be connected directly to an entirely new continent – this is a core connection in our aviation network vision that has been decades in the making. This service will directly benefit business, investment, and our broader tourism economy."
Eliminating Stopovers
Previously, travelers from the United States to Adelaide had to make stopovers at other east-coast Australian airports like Brisbane, Melbourne, and Sydney. However, with the new non-stop service starting on December 11, travelers can now fly from cities such as Chicago, Washington, Denver, and Seattle to Adelaide with just one stop.
Demand for the route is expected to be strong, as Adelaide travelers will be able to enjoy not only the San Francisco Bay area but also connect to United’s wider domestic and international network from SFO.
Expanding United’s Presence in Oceania
This new route will mark United’s sixth route to Oceania, complementing its existing Australian routes. These include year-round services from Melbourne to San Francisco and Los Angeles, as well as year-round flights from Sydney to San Francisco and Los Angeles. Seasonal services are also available to Houston.
Across the Tasman Sea, United offers year-round flights to Auckland Airport, with seasonal services added to Christchurch Airport during the Southern Hemisphere summer season.
Enhanced Connectivity from Adelaide
Adelaide is home to approximately 1.4 million people, representing most of South Australia’s population of 1.8 million. Located just four miles (six kilometers) from the city’s CBD, Adelaide Airport served over 8.7 million passengers in the 2024/2025 financial year.
While the airport has lacked a non-stop connection to the United States, it has a robust international network serving most major Asian and Middle Eastern airports.
Passengers traveling on the new United Airlines service to Adelaide will also benefit from a code-share partnership with Virgin Australia. This allows for seamless connections and onward travel throughout Virgin Australia’s extensive Australian network from ADL. This includes non-stop flights to destinations such as Alice Springs, Canberra, Perth, Hobart, and Launceston, as well as trunk routes like Brisbane, Sydney, Melbourne, and the Gold Coast.
