Puth specifically mentioned the sonic booms generated by SpaceX's rocket launches at the Vandenberg Space Force Base in Santa Barbara County. He noted that the noise has become progressively louder since the start of the rocket launches in the area. In his post, he described a recent launch that occurred at 3:40 a.m. local time, which he claimed was so loud it reached between 150-160 decibels. This level of noise not only shook his entire house but also frightened his pregnant wife.

The launch of Starlink satellites via the Falcon 9 rocket was reported on SpaceX’s website, with a disclaimer stating that residents in nearby counties, including Santa Barbara, might hear one or more sonic booms depending on weather conditions. This particular launch marked the fourth SpaceX mission launched from the California base this month, with another scheduled for this weekend.

Despite Puth’s public concern, Musk has yet to respond to his post.

A Growing Trend of Complaints

The lawsuit was dismissed in September by a federal judge, who stated there was no evidence the FAA did not adequately research the launch’s impact on wildlife.

Local news stations have also covered the growing concerns. For example, 25 News KXXV in Florida featured residents near a launch site complaining about increased noise from rocket launches. One resident noted that the noise has gotten significantly worse over the past six months.

Understanding the Noise from SpaceX Launches

SpaceX acknowledges that its rockets produce sonic booms when they return to Earth. According to a disclaimer on their website, the rockets "slow down from supersonic speeds, resulting in audible sonic booms in the area around the return location." The company states that these booms are typically brief and may sound like a "double clap of thunder" on the ground.

Elon Musk has previously downplayed concerns about the noise from rocket launches. In a post last year, he compared the noise from a Texas launch site to storms and hurricanes, dismissing a New York Times report that suggested sonic booms could pose risks to structures.

Are SpaceX Launches Getting Louder?

SpaceX has been launching rockets more frequently and developing spacecraft that produce more noise. So far this year, the company has conducted 160 missions using the Falcon 9 rocket from sites in California and Florida, surpassing the number of Falcon missions launched in 2024. Additionally, the Starship rocket, still in testing, has been launched 11 times and is reportedly "the loudest rocket ever," according to the New York Times.
