First-Time Purchase: Earn Bonus Delta SkyMiles Now

Delta Air Lines Introduces First Ever Mile Purchase Bonus
For the first time in its history, Delta Air Lines has introduced a promotion allowing customers to purchase SkyMiles with a bonus. This change comes as a significant shift for the airline, which has traditionally avoided sales on its miles. The current promotion runs through November 12, 2025, offering members the opportunity to boost their SkyMiles balance with up to a 50% bonus.
Tiered Bonus Structure
Delta’s promotional pricing is structured in tiers, with higher bonuses for larger purchases. Here's how it works:
- Purchase 2,000 to 10,000 miles: Receive a 25% bonus
- Purchase 12,000 to 20,000 miles: Receive a 30% bonus
- Purchase 22,000 to 30,000 miles: Receive a 35% bonus
- Purchase 32,000 to 40,000 miles: Receive a 40% bonus
- Purchase 52,000 to 60,000 miles: Receive a 50% bonus (equivalent to 2.41 cents per mile)
Miles must be purchased in increments of 2,000, and a 7.5% sales tax will apply to all transactions. Additionally, members are limited to purchasing up to 60,000 miles per calendar year for their own account. However, during promotional periods, this limit can be doubled, allowing members to buy up to 120,000 miles in total for the year.
Is It Worth It?
Buying the maximum 60,000 miles under the promotion would cost around $1,500. While this might seem like a good deal at first glance, it’s important to consider the value of SkyMiles. On average, they are valued at about 1.2 cents per mile. Even with the 50% bonus, the effective cost per mile is still 2.41 cents — nearly double the typical value.
That said, there are scenarios where the promotion could be beneficial. For instance, if you’re just a few thousand miles short of an award, purchasing a smaller number of miles with a bonus might be worth it. Buying 2,000 miles with a 25% bonus would cost $75.25, adding 500 miles to your account. If that helps you secure a ticket that would otherwise cost hundreds of dollars, it could be a smart move.
However, for most travelers, the math doesn’t add up. Without promotions, Delta sells SkyMiles at 3.5 cents each, making the 2.41-cent rate during the sale still more expensive than the standard value.
Transfer Promotion for Friends and Family
In addition to the purchase bonus, Delta is also running a special promotion for transferring SkyMiles to others. Normally, transferring miles costs 1 cent per mile plus a $30 processing fee. But through November 12, 2025, transfers will cost only $0.002 per mile and 50% off the processing fee. For example, transferring 10,000 miles would cost $20 plus $15 in fees, compared to the regular $100 plus $30 — saving $95.
This makes transferring miles more attractive, especially for those looking to help loved ones redeem awards without paying the usual high fees.
Additional Benefits
One advantage of this promotion is that all purchases are processed directly through Delta rather than third-party platforms like Points.com. This means that if you hold a Delta American Express card, these transactions may qualify for bonus miles as eligible Delta purchases. However, it’s unclear whether they will also count as “direct airfare purchases” for cards like The Platinum Card® from American Express, which typically offers 5x points on such transactions.
Final Thoughts
While the current promotion is a welcome change for Delta SkyMiles members, it still doesn’t make buying miles a great deal for most travelers. The 50% bonus is a step in the right direction, but the overall value remains lower than what many expect. That said, this is the first time Delta has ever offered a purchase bonus, which could signal a shift in strategy. Travelers should keep an eye out for future promotions that may offer even better deals.
