"He Was Loved by Many": Mundelein Man Dies in Motorcycle Crash with Waukegan Woman's Minivan

Tragic Motorcycle Crash in Arlington Heights Leaves Family in Grief

A tragic accident in Arlington Heights has left a community in shock and a family mourning the loss of a beloved member. A Mundelein man died after a collision between his motorcycle and a minivan, an incident that has sparked an ongoing investigation by local authorities.

The crash occurred around 5:30 p.m. last Wednesday at the intersection of Golf Road and Goebbert Road. Emergency services were called to the scene after reports of a vehicle collision. According to police officials, the incident involved a black 2017 Toyota Sienna minivan traveling westbound on Golf Road. The driver, a 48-year-old woman from Waukegan, was the sole occupant of the vehicle.

At the time of the crash, the woman was turning left onto Goebbert Road, which is southbound. She entered the intersection on a green light. At the same time, a black 1979 Yamaha Special 650 motorcycle was traveling eastbound on Golf Road. The motorcyclist, identified as Jeffrey Tanafranca, 44, of Mundelein, was also entering the intersection on a solid green signal.

The two vehicles collided, with the motorcycle striking the front passenger tire area of the minivan. While the driver of the Toyota was not injured, Tanafranca suffered severe traumatic injuries. He was wearing a helmet at the time of the crash but was found unresponsive by emergency crews.

Emergency responders from the Arlington Heights Fire Department provided immediate advanced life support care before transporting Tanafranca to Endeavor Health Northwestern Community Hospital in Arlington Heights. Despite their efforts, he succumbed to his injuries in the emergency room.

Eastbound Golf Road between Arlington Heights Road and Goebbert Road was closed for approximately four hours while investigators examined the scene. An independent witness who was behind the motorcycle reported that the rider was traveling at about 30 mph. The traffic light for eastbound drivers was green when the van turned in front of the motorcyclist.

The Arlington Heights Police Department is working with the Major Case Assistance Team – Serious Traffic Accident Reconstruction (STAR) unit to determine the exact cause of the crash. No traffic citations have been issued at this time, and the case remains under investigation.

Tanafranca’s death has deeply affected those who knew him. Mayrel de Guzman, a Niles resident, described him as a caring husband, compassionate son, admirable brother, loving uncle, and great friend. “His sudden passing has left family and friends in deep grief,” she said. “We are struggling to imagine every family gathering and holiday without his laughter, warmth, and love.”

De Guzman emphasized how much Tanafranca was loved by many. “He had the biggest heart, jokes that could light up the room, and was always there with answers. He was someone you could always count on.”

A visitation for Tanafranca is scheduled for Saturday and Sunday at Colonial-Wojciechowski Funeral Home of Niles. A funeral mass will be held on Tuesday at St. Isaac Jogues Church in Niles. In addition, a GoFundMe account has been created with a $10,000 goal to help cover funeral expenses for the family.
