Trump Welcomed by King, Confronted by Protesters on UK Visit

Trump's State Visit to the U.K. Begins with Royal Welcome
President Donald Trump commenced his state visit to the United Kingdom on Wednesday, starting with a visit to Windsor Castle where he met with King Charles III. This marks the first time an elected political leader has been hosted for two state visits by a British monarch, as Trump previously visited during the reign of the late Queen Elizabeth II in 2019.
The president and First Lady Melania Trump were greeted at Windsor Castle’s Walled Garden by Prince William and his wife, Kate Middleton. They were later welcomed by the king and taken by carriage to the castle, where they observed a ceremonial reception. The day included a state banquet with the royal family, featuring a range of notable guests from the business and technology sectors.
A Day of Ceremonies and Cultural Exchange
Trump arrived at Windsor Castle aboard Marine One after spending the night at Winfield House in central London. During their tour of the castle, the Trumps viewed historical items from the Royal Collection, including 18th-century watercolor paintings, transatlantic messages between Queen Victoria and President James Buchanan, and a hot dog picnic in the 1930s that young Queen Elizabeth wrote about.
Trump expressed admiration for the exhibits, saying, "That is so amazing." Following the tour, the president and key advisors visited St. George’s Chapel for a service. A choir of small children performed, and the Trumps laid a wreath on the tomb of Queen Elizabeth II before taking a tour of the chapel.
A Unique Musical Performance and State Dinner
After the service, the two couples watched the Beating Retreat musical performance, which was performed for the first time at a state visit. At least 200 military personnel participated in the ceremony, which concluded with a flyover from the Red Arrows, the Royal Air Force display team. The performance ended with colorful smoke from the planes’ engines, creating a memorable visual spectacle.
The state dinner featured an impressive list of guests, including prominent figures such as Blackstone CEO Steve Schwarzman, Rupert Murdoch, Apple CEO Tim Cook, Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang, and OpenAI CEO Sam Altman. King Charles addressed the importance of the U.S.-U.K. relationship, emphasizing shared values and the progress both nations have made.
Remarks and Celebrations
During his speech, King Charles highlighted the special bond between the two countries, noting that “our people have fought and died together for the values we hold dear.” He also referenced America’s upcoming 250th anniversary, stating that despite the ocean separating them, the U.S. and the U.K. are now “the closest of kin.”
Trump responded by thanking the king and reflecting on his efforts to preserve history, support the poor, and aid soldiers. He praised the Prince and Princess of Wales, calling Kate “healthy” and “beautiful.” Trump also acknowledged the U.K.’s historical contributions to law and liberty, emphasizing the unbreakable bond between the two nations.
Upcoming Events and Ceremonial Welcomes
On Thursday, Trump will meet with British Prime Minister Keir Starmer at Chequers, the prime minister’s official country residence. The meeting is expected to include a press conference before Trump departs for the U.S. White House officials emphasized that the visit aims to highlight the deep ties between the U.S. and the U.K., while also celebrating the upcoming 250th anniversary of the United States.
The visit will feature a joint U.S.-British flypast of F-35 fighter jets. Approximately 1,300 members of the British armed forces and 120 horses will be involved in the ceremonial welcome at Windsor Castle. The guard of honor will be the largest ever organized for a state visit to the U.K.
