UK's New Travel System Surprises Visitors, Expert Warns
New UK Travel System Could Catch International Visitors Off Guard
Starting in February 2026, the United Kingdom is set to implement a new travel system that could potentially cause confusion for international visitors. The Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) will be introduced at British airports, requiring all non-British and non-Irish travelers to obtain digital permission to enter the country. This can be done through an ETA or an eVisa.
The ETA allows foreign tourists to stay in the UK for up to six months for various purposes such as tourism, business, visiting family, or short-term study. It will be electronically linked to passports, and upon approval, travelers must seek final permission from a Border Force officer upon arrival.
British and Irish citizens will not need an ETA to enter the UK. However, travelers from 85 nationalities that typically do not require a visa, including those from the United States, Canada, European Union countries, and Australia, will need to apply for an ETA.
This initiative is part of broader efforts to digitize the UK's immigration system and create a more contactless border experience in the future. Despite these advancements, experts warn that the new system may lead to complications if travelers are not adequately prepared.
Travel Insurance Expert Warns of Potential Pitfalls
Alicia Hempsted, a travel insurance expert from MonkeySuperMarket, has issued a warning to tourists about the importance of planning ahead for the new system. She emphasized that being denied boarding due to not having an ETA could result in significant costs, re-bookings, or missed experiences.

Hempsted explained that travel insurance policies do not cover mistakes related to the ETA, such as failing to apply on time. She added that while insurance won't cover the lack of an ETA, a comprehensive policy can protect travelers in other ways, such as covering disruptions like missed connections or last-minute changes.
She advised travelers to carefully review the details of their insurance coverage before purchasing it to understand what is included.
How to Apply for an ETA
Applying for an ETA is straightforward. Travelers can download the official UK ETA app and complete the necessary details. The cost for each application is £16. Hempsted noted that many travelers fail to check entry requirements before traveling. For those with family or friends visiting from overseas, it is crucial to conduct thorough research and plan ahead.

She also highlighted that individuals with dual nationality may face challenges when applying for an ETA. In such cases, they may need an up-to-date passport, which can cost up to £120 to renew.
Global Trends in Travel Authorisation
Other countries, such as the United States and Canada, have already introduced similar pre-authorisation travel schemes. In Europe, the ETIAS (European Travel Information and Authorization System) is set to launch in late 2026. This system will require UK visitors to obtain authorisation to enter Schengen Area countries.
As these systems continue to evolve, travelers must remain informed about the latest requirements to avoid unnecessary complications during their journeys. Whether it’s the UK’s ETA or the EU’s ETIAS, staying ahead of the changes can make all the difference in ensuring a smooth and hassle-free trip.
