A Unique Holiday Experience in Santa Cruz

Santa Cruz is known for its vibrant arts scene, and during the holiday season, this energy comes to life in a special way. For those who appreciate art and unique gifts, the Tannery Arts Center offers an exceptional opportunity through its annual Winter Art Market. This event, now in its 13th year, has become a beloved tradition that brings together artists, community members, and visitors alike.

A Celebration of Creativity

The Winter Art Market is one of two annual events hosted by the Tannery Arts Center, with the other being the Spring Art Market in May. Unlike traditional retail settings, the market provides a space where artists can showcase and sell their handmade creations directly to the public. Bree Karpavage, the Tannery’s program manager, emphasizes that this event is particularly focused on the artists living in the Tannery’s lofts.

“It’s just a way for the creative community here to come together, celebrate the season and sell their artwork to the community,” she said. The event also allows artists to take an active role in its organization, creating a sense of unity and collaboration among participants.

Diverse Art and Activities

This year’s market promises a wide array of artistic offerings. Radius Gallery will feature a small works exhibition with 15 local artists selling gift-worthy items for under $300. Studio 122 will showcase three ceramicists, including one who specializes in floral work. Printmakers at the Tannery will offer live demonstrations, giving attendees the chance to create their own cards.

In addition to these activities, there will be various forms of art available for purchase, such as pottery, jewelry, prints, glass works, leather works, crochet, ornaments, and driftwood. Karpavage described the event as “a little of everything, a lot of different mediums represented.”

More Than Just Shopping

Beyond being a gift bazaar, the Winter Art Market is also a celebration of the community. Everyone’s Music School will curate a live performance schedule featuring pianist Robert Jackson, singer and guitarist Eli Mbanza, and Christmas carols from the Pacific Voices Choir. Local food vendors like Santa Cruz Eatery, Spontaneous Confections, and Olio will provide a variety of food and beverages, adding to the festive atmosphere.

For families, the event includes a kids’ maker zone where children can participate in hands-on ornament making. Karpavage noted that this part of the event is always a highlight. “The kids always enjoy coming out,” she said.

A Special Community Connection

Karpavage values the community aspect of the Winter Art Market. She sees it as a way to celebrate the entire year of creativity and collaboration within the Tannery. “All of the different studios and residents come together and each bring their individual flavor and pieces to the event to make it happen,” she explained. This collective effort makes the event truly special.
