2025 Toyota 4Runner: Perfect Family SUV for Adventures

A Practical, Easy Family Car

When it comes to family travel, simplicity and reliability are key. The 2025 Toyota 4Runner proved to be an excellent choice for a recent vacation with my wife, two kids, and younger brother. While I initially expected a standard midsize SUV, I ended up with what felt like the perfect blend of practicality and performance. The TRD Off-Road trim offered just the right amount of off-road capability without breaking the bank.

One of the standout features of the 4Runner is its massive trunk space. With 48.4 cubic feet of cargo room behind the second row, it easily accommodated all our belongings—ranging from large suitcases to beach gear and even a car seat carrier. The convenience of storage compartments in the doors, center console, and trunk made it easy to keep everything organized. Folding the seats was also a breeze, requiring only a single pull on a manual lever.

It's Pleasant To Drive

Despite the limited road conditions on Nantucket, the 4Runner handled well. The 2.4-liter inline-four engine delivered smooth power through an eight-speed transmission, making it suitable for city driving. While I prefer the hybrid version for its slightly better performance, the gas model was more than adequate for our needs. The vehicle also performed well during light off-roading, with enough ground clearance to handle sandy terrain.

Fuel economy improved compared to previous generations, though it still isn’t the most efficient option. The gas model earned 19 MPG city and 25 MPG highway, while the hybrid managed 23 MPG combined. However, the cost savings from fuel efficiency might not justify the higher price of the hybrid.

You’re Probably Going To Remove That Air Dam

The 4Runner shares a front air dam with the new Tacoma. While this feature helps reduce drag and improve fuel economy, it can also interfere with off-road performance and looks unattractive. Many owners choose to remove it, as it doesn't affect the vehicle’s functionality. The process is simple, requiring only a screwdriver and a few minutes of effort.

If You Want To Live The Family Dream, Prepare To Pay In Cash

After experiencing the 4Runner firsthand, I was eager to purchase one. However, the pricing was a major hurdle. The TRD Off-Road i-Force Max hybrid had an MSRP of $54,444, with leasing options costing around $850 per month. Financing at 9.11% APR would result in monthly payments of approximately $1,000 over 72 months. For comparison, a similar trim on the Tacoma was more affordable, with lower financing rates and cheaper monthly payments.

While the 4Runner is an exceptional family vehicle, its price may make it out of reach for many. Unless there’s a significant financial windfall, it might remain a dream car for now.
