Airline Unveils World's Longest Nonstop Flight, Over a Day Long

New Record for the Longest Direct Flight
China Eastern Airlines is set to make history with the launch of a new direct flight between Shanghai and Buenos Aires. This route, scheduled to begin on December 4, 2025, will connect Pudong International Airport (PVG) in Shanghai with Ministro Pistarini International Airport (EZE) in Buenos Aires, Argentina. The journey spans an impressive 10,600 nautical miles (12,100 regular miles), making it the longest direct commercial flight in the world. The outbound trip from Shanghai to Buenos Aires is expected to take approximately 25 hours and 30 minutes, while the return leg could last up to 29 hours due to challenging headwinds.
This flight is considered "antipodal," linking two cities that are nearly on opposite sides of the Earth. Despite being a direct flight, it includes a scheduled two-hour stopover in Auckland, New Zealand. However, passengers may not even notice the stopover as the same aircraft and flight number will be used throughout the journey. It is currently unclear if passengers will remain on board during the layover, but there are no luggage transfers or immigration requirements for Chinese nationals traveling through Auckland.
The Boeing 777-300 ER, which will operate this route, has long been a favorite for long-haul flights since its debut in 1998. As the largest twin-engine passenger plane, the ER model boasts a maximum range of 7,880 nautical miles, allowing it to carry passengers over vast distances. China Eastern claims this new route will simplify connections to South America by avoiding the congestion and delays often associated with European and U.S. stopovers, making it easier for travelers to adjust to time zones.
The flight will operate eastbound on Mondays and Thursdays, and westbound on Tuesdays and Fridays. Standard economy seats start at $1,718 one-way, offering a glimpse into the future of global air travel.
Expanding China’s Global Reach
This new route is part of China’s broader efforts to strengthen ties with Latin American countries. By creating faster and more direct connections, China aims to enhance trade and political relations across the region. The "Air Silk Road" initiative is a key component of the Belt and Road Initiative, which seeks to expand global infrastructure and influence.
Currently, the longest nonstop flight is operated by Singapore Airlines, connecting Singapore (SIN) to New York's JFK airport, covering over 9,500 miles in just under 19 hours. The previous record holder for the longest direct commercial flight was Air China's Flight 897 from Beijing to São Paulo, Brazil, with a stopover in Madrid. China Eastern's new route will surpass this record by nearly three hours, offering easier access to Argentina and surrounding countries like Uruguay and Chile.
Lin Zhijie, an aviation industry analyst, noted that the availability of regular flights linking major South American capitals with Beijing and Shanghai reflects the expansion of China's international route network into one of the most distant markets. He emphasized that the ability to operate ultra-long routes is a critical factor in measuring the capabilities of global hub operators.
China Eastern is also a member of the SkyTeam alliance, which includes Argentine airline AerolÃneas Argentinas, as well as U.S. carriers Delta and Virgin Atlantic. This partnership highlights the growing interconnectedness of global air travel.
Preparing for the Journey
While the idea of spending more than a full day in a pressurized metal tube may seem daunting, ultra-long-haul travel is becoming increasingly important in modern commerce, diplomacy, and social interactions. For those brave enough to embark on such a journey, experts recommend packing smart to make the experience more bearable. Items like compression socks, noise-cancelling headphones, and melatonin can help ease the discomfort of extended flights.
Flight attendants who regularly handle these epic journeys also offer valuable tips for surviving the long hours. Whether it's staying hydrated, moving around the cabin, or bringing along entertainment, preparation is key to making the most of such a unique travel experience.
