Solo Travelers Get Their Own Cruise Ship

The Rise of Solo Cruising and the Launch of a New Era
Cruising alone often comes with a financial burden. Most solo travelers are faced with expensive "single supplements" and find themselves navigating a cruise industry that is traditionally designed for couples and groups. However, the landscape is changing as more cruise lines recognize the growing demand for solo travel. While companies like Norwegian and Celebrity have started to cater to this market with dedicated solo cabins and experiences, one cruise line is taking it a step further by launching the first-ever cruise ship exclusively for solo travelers.
Starting in 2027, Riviera Travel will debut the MS George Eliot, a ship designed specifically for solo travelers. This vessel will accommodate up to 68 guests, each traveling alone, on exclusive European itineraries throughout the spring, summer, and fall seasons.
Stuart Milan, president of North America for Riviera Travel, emphasized the popularity of their solo river cruises and the need for a dedicated ship to meet the rising demand. “With growing demand for even more solo departures, we knew it was time to dedicate an entire ship to this thriving segment of the market,” he said. “With this announcement, we are proud to take the next step in redefining solo travel and to offer an all-new luxury river cruise experience.”
What to Expect on the MS George Eliot
The MS George Eliot will feature a lineup of six European river cruises, all tailored for solo travelers. These include:
- A 15-day Budapest to the Black Sea River Cruise
- A 15-day Heart of the Danube Cruise
- An 8-Day Blue Danube River Cruise
- An 8-Day Rhine Cruise to Switzerland
- A 9-Day Rhine and Moselle River Cruise
- An 8-day Rhine, Strasbourg and Heidelberg River Cruise
Prices vary depending on the itinerary, with the 8-Day Rhine and Moselle package starting at $3,449 and the 15-day Budapest to Black Sea Cruise priced at $9,049. These fares include meals, an "all-day drink package," and shore excursions. Each passenger will be assigned a double cabin, with most featuring a French Balcony.
Riviera Travel has also planned numerous events and activities to help passengers connect with fellow travelers. A welcome dinner and cocktail reception, along with daily entertainment, will provide opportunities for social interaction. These events aim to create a sense of community among solo travelers who share similar interests.
A Growing Trend in Solo Travel
The MS George Eliot is part of a broader trend in the cruise industry, where more premium offerings are being introduced to cater to the increasing number of solo travelers. Here's how some of the top cruise lines are adapting to this shift:
-
Norwegian Cruise Line (NCL): Offers the most single-occupancy "studio" cabins across multiple classes, including balcony options. Solo travelers can enjoy private studio lounges, organized meetups, and group happy hours, dinners, and activities.
-
Virgin Voyages: This adults-only, all-inclusive cruise line caters specifically to solo travelers with dedicated solo cabins and meetups. The ship’s design encourages socializing through open spaces, shared tables, and lively bar areas.
-
Royal Caribbean: Waives single supplements on studio solo rooms on Quantum and some Oasis-class vessels. Passengers can enjoy amenities such as the SeaPlex and Royal Escape Room, which allow for both independent and group interactions.
-
Celebrity Cruises: Their newer "Edge" class ships, such as Celebrity Apex and Ascent, feature spacious single staterooms with "Infinite Verandas." Daily wine and cocktail happy hours provide opportunities to meet others, along with shipwide entertainment at The Theatre and Eden.
-
Holland America Line (HAL): Offers daily solo traveler gatherings, such as happy hours and coffee meetups. Communal activities like wine tastings, cooking demos, and music venues are available, and guests can request to be seated with other diners at dinner.
As the demand for solo travel continues to grow, cruise lines are increasingly focusing on creating inclusive and engaging experiences for individuals seeking adventure without the pressure of companionship. The launch of the MS George Eliot marks a significant milestone in this evolving trend, offering a new level of comfort, convenience, and connection for solo travelers.
