Top Airports in North America According to Traveler Satisfaction

Travelers often face a mix of challenges when visiting airports, such as overpriced food, flight delays, and long lines at security checkpoints. However, not all airports are the same. A recent survey conducted by J.D. Power has revealed which airports in North America are providing the most satisfying experiences for travelers.

The annual poll, which included responses from thousands of American and Canadian travelers, highlighted the best and worst airports across different categories. For the second consecutive year, Minneapolis-Saint Paul International Airport topped the list of "mega airports," which are defined as those handling 33 million or more passengers annually. Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County Airport came in second, followed by Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport in third place. At the bottom of the mega airport category was Newark Liberty International Airport in New Jersey.

The survey collected data from over 30,000 participants who had traveled through at least one North American airport in the past year. In the large airport category, which includes airports with between 10 and 33 million annual passengers, John Wayne Airport in Orange County, California, ranked first for the second year in a row. Tampa International Airport took second place, while Dallas Love Field placed third. Philadelphia International Airport was the lowest-ranked in this group.

For medium-sized airports, which serve between 4.5 and 9.9 million passengers per year, Indianapolis International Airport was the top performer. Ontario International Airport and Buffalo Niagara International Airport followed closely behind. Edmonton International Airport, however, was the least satisfying in this category.

This year's study marks its 20th anniversary and shows that overall satisfaction with North American airports is on the rise. Despite persistent issues like crowded terminals, flight delays, and higher prices, traveler satisfaction scores increased by 10 points on a 1,000-point scale. This improvement was largely attributed to better food and beverage options, enhanced retail experiences, and smoother travel processes within airports.

According to Michael Taylor, managing director of travel, hospitality, and retail at J.D. Power, efforts by airports to introduce authentic local food and beverage brands have significantly contributed to higher satisfaction levels. He also noted that many airports have invested in major renovations, further improving the traveler experience.

The survey evaluated several key areas, including ease of navigation through the airport, the quality of facilities, staff performance, and the availability of food, beverages, and retail options.
